私って英語わかるんじゃね？英語学習のモチベ維持（English below）

完璧じゃないけど、伝わる楽しさ

🌻私の英語、捨てたもんじゃない

最近ふと思う。

「私って英語わかるんじゃね？」笑

なぜかっていうと――エリーと会話できているから。
もちろんペラペラではない。
もし最初から流暢なら、それこそ「ほんやくコンニャク」だ。笑

この前おもしろかったのが、エリー（車オタク）に
「エンジンの仕組み知ってる？」と聞かれたとき。
「あ、知らんなー。教えて！」と言ったら、すごくわかりやすく説明してくれた。翻訳も使いながらだけど、「わかるわかる！」ってなった。
あれ？私って天才？……いや、エリーの説明が上手いんだろうな、たぶん。笑

どんな風に英語がわかったの？

ざっくり言うと、会話そのものがわかる。 全部じゃない。
わからない部分は翻訳に頼る。 でも、それ以外はエリーの話すことがちゃんと理解できる。すごくない？ しかもエリーも日本語が上手くなってきて、相乗効果でどんどん会話が楽しくなっている。

映画を観ながら「誰が怪しい？」ってやりとりも英語でできた。100%理解してるわけじゃないけど、流れや雰囲気で「あー、わかるわかる」となる。

完璧じゃなくても大丈夫

英語は「単語覚えて、文法覚えて」と勉強してきたけど、今は参考書をやめた。
だって面白くないから。笑
エリーと話すほうが、何倍も価値がある。 知っている単語だけでも意外と伝わるし、文法なんて全然わかってなくても、ジェスチャーと単語で通じる。
もちろん、ちゃんと伝わってるかどうかは怪しいけど、会話できる感覚がある。
それで十分楽しい。

前に「なんでなかなかわからんのやろ？」って言ったら、かにかにに
「翻訳使いよるけんやろ」とズバッと言われた。
たしかに翻訳に頼ると、自分で考えなくなるから覚えにくい。 やっぱり会話そのものが一番の練習なんだと思う。

伝わる楽しさ

あるとき「給料が上がったらドライブに連れて行って」と言いたかった。    
•   給料 → salary    
•   上がる → up    
•   ドライブ → drive    
•   連れて行く → …？ give？arrive？bring？come？go？
……色んな単語が浮かんで、最後にひらめいた。
あ！ take だ！ で、自分なりに作ったのが、
「Your salary up, and you take me drive」 お願いの文としては不自然かもしれないけど、通じた！ これがめちゃくちゃ嬉しかった。
時間はかかったけど、エリーはちゃんと聞いてくれて、理解してくれた。
こういう成功体験があると、また「私って英語わかるんじゃね？」と思える。

これからどうする？

英語はテストの点数じゃなくて「伝わるかどうか」。
ちなみに高校の英語の点数は一桁だった。笑
これからも完璧じゃなくていい。 小さな成功体験を積み重ねて、「伝わる楽しさ」を増やしていきたい。

My English Isn’t Perfect, but It Works

Lately, I’ve been thinking—
Hey, maybe I actually understand English? 😂

Why? Because I can talk with Ellie.
Not perfectly, not fluently. But somehow, we understand each other.
If I were fluent from the start, I’d basically be a walking translation app. lol

One time, Ellie (the car geek) asked me,
“Do you know how an engine works?”
I said, “Nope, tell me!”
And he explained it so clearly—even with a bit of translation—I could totally get it.
For a second I thought, Am I a genius?
…Nah, Ellie’s just really good at explaining things. 😆

🎯 How I Started to Understand

I don’t understand every single word,
but I get the conversation.
When I don’t, I just use a translator—but most of the time, I can follow.
Ellie’s Japanese is improving too, so we kind of meet in the middle.

Even while watching movies together, we can talk like,
“Who’s the bad guy here?” in English.
I might not understand 100%, but I can feel the meaning.
That feeling of “Oh, I get it!” is so addictive.

💬 It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

I used to study English the “right” way—vocabulary, grammar, and all that.
But honestly? It’s boring. 😂
Talking with Ellie is way more valuable.
Even with simple words, it works.
Even if grammar is a mess, gestures and tone do the job.

Once I said,
“When your salary goes up, you take me drive!”
Totally broken English—but he understood!
That moment was the best feeling ever.
He smiled, I laughed, and I thought—
Maybe I really can speak English.

☀️ What I Learned

English isn’t about test scores.
It’s about being understood.
For the record, my high school English grade? One digit. 😅

From now on, I don’t care about being perfect.
I just want to enjoy every “I said it—and it worked!” moment.
Because that’s what makes learning fun.

カードゲームで英会話！AGOで楽しく学んだ体験記 🎯（English below）

ゲーム感覚で英語力と会話の自信がアップ

😥違うことを

参考書やアプリでの英語学習に少し飽きてきていた。なんか違うことできんかなー。
リスニングは、エリーとの会話でだいぶ上達したたと思う、多分笑。
でも全然会話にならない。勉強したことが活かせない。そんな風に感じていた。

👱エリーの授業

エリーは、英語の先生なんだけど、エリーのがしてることをのぞいてみたいって話したことがあった。
実際の学習風景がみたいし、エリーがどんなことをしているのか、なんなら、エリーの授業に参加したいと思っていた。
その話をエリーが覚えていてくれて、ある日一緒にカードゲームをしようと言ってくれた。それが、AGOという英会話カードゲーム。
勉強ではなく、カードゲーム、カードゲームなんだけど英語学習。そんな楽しいゲームだ。

♠️AGOとは？

•   カードゲーム形式の英語学習ツール    
•   UNOのようなルール＋カードに書かれた英語の質問やフレーズ    
•   対戦しながら質問に答える → 会話の練習になる    
•   レベルやテーマごとにデッキが分かれていて、初心者〜中級者も楽しめる こんな感じ。

ウノやってるのと同じだから勝負の行方も楽しい。

🌟どんな感じ？

エリーに「僕の仕事をみたいっていっていたよね」って言われた。
彼はトランプを持ってきた。
「ウノを知ってる？ルールは同じだよ」ウノはしたことあるから、大丈夫！
そして、エリーがカードを配る。
カードを一枚出すときに、そこに書かれている質問をする。  
例えばエリーが引いたカードが
「What did you do yesterday?」
そうすると、私がそれについてアンサーする。
これを繰り返し手持ちのカードがなくなったら勝ち。
最初は少し緊張したけど、だんだん楽しくなってくる。 英語で質問すると相手のこともわかる。
あー、こんなことが好きなんだ、こんなことがしたいんだー。そこから、話が広がったりもする。

これは楽しい。

言葉がわからなくてもエリーが発音を推してくれる。だから安心してできる。

♥️やって感じた効果・感想

•   勉強というより遊び感覚だから緊張しない（最初はどんなかなって緊張したけど）慣れれば大丈夫！すぐ慣れる！    
•   このフレーズは覚えるかも、使えるっていうのがでてくる。   
•   エリーの質問を聞き取るっていうトレーニングにもなる    
•   自分の弱点（言えない単語・言い回し）がハッキリわかる

エリーも言ってたけど、紙の勉強だけじゃつまらない、確かに！
英語は「机に向かう時間」だけじゃなくても上達できる、というか、遊びの方が覚えやすいかも。
これ、恋人用とか、友達用、買い物用、みたいに、色んなジャンルがあれば楽しいかも 自分用のカードを作っても楽しいだろうなって思ったし、自分で文章が作ってみたいって思った。

夢である英語で日記を書くってことに挑戦してもいいのではないか？と思えた。完璧じゃなくても、今ある知識で日記を書けばいいんじゃないかなって思えた。

😥 Looking for Something Different

I was getting a bit tired of learning English through textbooks and apps.
I needed something… different.
Listening has definitely improved, thanks to my conversations with Ellie—well, I think so, haha.
But still, I couldn’t hold a proper conversation.
I felt like all the things I studied weren’t really coming out when I tried to speak.

👱 Ellie’s Class

Ellie is an English teacher, and I once told him I wanted to peek into his lessons—
to see what his classes are like, and maybe even join one someday.
He remembered that, and one day he said,
“Let’s play a card game together.”
That game was AGO, an English conversation card game.
It’s not studying—it’s playing.
But while you’re playing, you’re actually learning.

♠️ What’s AGO?

  • A card game designed to help you learn English
  • Similar to UNO, but with English questions or phrases written on the cards
  • You play while answering the questions → perfect speaking practice
  • Comes in different levels and themes, so even beginners can enjoy it

It’s like playing UNO—you focus on winning, but you end up learning at the same time!

🌟 How It Works

Ellie said, “You once told me you wanted to see what I do at work, right?”
Then he pulled out a deck of cards.
“Do you know UNO? The rules are basically the same.”
Of course I knew UNO!
He started dealing the cards, and when you play one, you read the question written on it.

For example, Ellie drew a card that said:
“What did you do yesterday?”
Then I had to answer that question.
We took turns asking and answering until one of us ran out of cards.
At first, I was nervous, but soon I started having fun.

The best part? You really get to know the other person.
Like, “Oh, so that’s what he likes,” or “That’s something he wants to do.”
The conversation just flows naturally.

And even when I got stuck, Ellie helped me with the pronunciation,
so I could relax and enjoy it.

♥️ What I Learned (and Felt)

  • It feels more like playing than studying, so there’s no pressure (I was nervous at first, but it goes away fast!)
  • You naturally remember phrases that are useful or fun to say
  • Listening to Ellie’s questions helps improve comprehension skills
  • You clearly see what words or expressions you can’t yet say

Ellie said something that really stuck with me:
“Paper study alone gets boring.” — and he’s totally right.
You don’t always have to study at a desk to learn English.
Sometimes, playing makes learning easier.

There should be different versions of this—like one for couples, one for friends, one for shopping.
It would be so fun!
It even made me want to make my own deck someday.

And more than that, it inspired me to start writing an English diary—
something I’ve always dreamed of doing.
It doesn’t have to be perfect.
I realized it’s okay to write with the English I already know.

Seriously though…
this card game is genius. 😆
