Work and Illness Part 1

I Wanted to Do My Best. But Things Didn’t Go the Way I Hoped.

After going back to taking two tablets of Silece, I finally started having more nights where I could sleep.

Compared to the weeks when I couldn’t sleep at all, my daily routine was slowly beginning to return.

But by then, another problem had already appeared.

It was work.

🏥 One Health Problem After Another

I had finally started a new job.

I was just entering my second month.

Then my health suddenly fell apart.

There was some mental stress, of course.

But that wasn’t the only reason.

The side effects of my diabetes medication.

High blood pressure.

Sciatic nerve pain in my lower back.

A severe back strain.

Asthma.

One problem after another kept piling up.

Of course, none of this was something I wanted.

I wasn’t being lazy.

Everything just happened at the same time.

😢 I Couldn’t Go to Work

As a result,

I was barely able to go to work for almost two months.

I know I caused trouble for my workplace.

That’s true.

It’s also true that work couldn’t move forward because I was absent.

So I felt responsible.

💼 A Meeting with My Manager

Around my third month,

my manager asked to speak with me.

The first thing they asked about was my health.

By then,

the side effects of my medication had settled down,

and the pain in my back had improved a lot.

So I answered,

“I’m doing okay.”

Then my manager said,

“When you’ve been absent this much, the work doesn’t move forward.”

“You can’t make decisions based only on emotions.”

That was the message.

When I heard those words,

I felt like I was being encouraged to resign.

But I didn’t want to quit.

I liked my job.

I wanted to do my best.

So I asked,

“Please give me a deadline.”

I wanted them to watch me until that day.

I wanted them to judge me based on whether I could come to work every day until then.

The deadline was two weeks.

⏳ One Week Later

About a week before the deadline,

I spoke with my manager again.

“How are you feeling?”

“You look like you’re pushing yourself too hard.”

That’s what they said.

For a moment,

it sounded like they were worried about me.

But then the conversation changed.

“Work isn’t decided by whether you like it or not.”

“We also have to consider your speed and your level of understanding.”

That’s what they told me.

Honestly,

it hurt.

There was no way I could make up for two months of absence in just one week.

But I still didn’t want to give up.

💻 Something That Really Shocked Me

Then the conversation turned to my computer.

A little earlier,

I had accidentally damaged a shared Excel file.

That was completely my mistake.

I accept that.

But then the discussion continued.

Taking company data home is prohibited.

Using a USB drive is completely unacceptable.

They were even considering introducing a system that could track who used each computer and when.

Of course,

I had never done anything like that.

And I never intended to.

Honestly,

I was shocked.

Before that,

a coworker had once asked me,

“Did you use this computer?”

I hadn’t.

So that surprised me too.

Maybe I was overthinking it.

But I couldn’t help feeling

that I was being suspected.

🌧 What Does Trust Mean?

The hardest part wasn’t that I couldn’t do my job.

It was feeling like I wasn’t trusted.

When people work together,

trust matters.

That’s why it hurt so much.

It felt like that trust had already begun to disappear.

Of course,

I understand that the company had its own concerns.

It’s true that I couldn’t come to work.

It’s true that the work fell behind.

But…

I was frustrated.

I was sad.

I never pretended to be someone I wasn’t during my job interview.

I was honest about who I was.

That’s exactly why

I felt so disappointed that I couldn’t live up to their expectations.

Around that time,

I started thinking…

Maybe…

the company wanted me to leave.

That feeling…

would soon become reality.

To be continued…

See you next time.

Before I take my Silece. 🌙
