Work and Illness Part 2 | The Day I Was Diagnosed with Adjustment Disorder
I wanted to keep going.
I really did.
But no matter how hard I tried, my body just wouldn’t move.
I Couldn’t Make Myself Go to Work
A few days after my manager said some harsh things to me, everything changed.
Every morning, I told myself I had to go to work.
But my body refused to move.
It felt similar to depression, but somehow… different.
I had always promised myself one thing.
“I will never miss work.”
But that day, I simply couldn’t do it.
I sent a message to my manager.
“I’m going to the hospital today, so I’ll have to take the day off.”
The moment I pressed send, I thought,
“This is the end.”
“It’s Adjustment Disorder.”
At the hospital, I explained everything that had happened.
After listening carefully, my doctor said,
“It’s adjustment disorder.”
Then he told me,
“Don’t think about work for now. Just take time to rest.”
“I’ll write you a medical certificate for one month.”
I sent the certificate to my company.
The Leave of Absence Notice
Not long after that, I received a Leave of Absence Notice from my company.
When I read it, my first thought was,
“So… they’re telling me to quit.”
Later, I found out that this type of notice is often just part of the normal administrative process.
I even contacted the Labor Standards Office, and they advised me to ask my company about the unclear parts.
But at that time, I couldn’t think that way.
All I could think was,
“They’re trying to push me out.”
Looking back now, I think that’s how overwhelmed my mind had become.
What Hurt the Most
I wasn’t expecting anyone to worry about me.
But…
I wish someone had simply asked,
“Are you okay?”
I never received a message like that from my company.
That’s when I became convinced that I had been forgotten.
Or maybe… replaced.
That’s how it felt.
During My Leave
Strangely enough, while I was on leave, I actually started feeling better.
I could live my daily life again.
But emotionally, I was struggling.
I wasn’t working.
I wasn’t earning money.
What was going to happen?
I felt frustrated.
Ashamed.
Guilty.
I kept blaming myself.
Sometimes I happened to drive near my workplace.
Just seeing the building made me feel sick.
That’s how deeply everything had affected me.
The People Who Helped Me
The good thing was…
No one around me blamed me.
My children continued working hard and tried to help however they could.
I even asked my daughter to help manage part of our household budget.
Ellie supported me too.
Even though his own life wasn’t easy, he helped with groceries and reminded me,
“We’ll get through this together.”
Without everyone’s support, I honestly don’t think I’d be where I am today.
I’m truly grateful.
Then the Deadline Arrived
My doctor had told me,
“Don’t think about work. Just rest.”
So that’s exactly what I tried to do.
But medical leave doesn’t last forever.
Eventually…
the final day arrived.
What happened after that deserves its own story.
I’ll write about it next time.
See you next time.
Before Silece.
