Which Diabetes Medication Is Best? My Experience Choosing Between Mounjaro and Januvia

This article is based on my personal experience. Diabetes treatment is different for everyone, so please talk with your doctor about the treatment that is right for you.

Which diabetes medication is best?

When you’re diagnosed with diabetes, there are many treatment options, from tablets to injections.

So, which one is actually the best?

I wondered the same thing.

Today, I’d like to share how I went from Mounjaro to Januvia, and eventually decided to go back to Mounjaro.

I had to take time off work because of Mounjaro’s side effects

I started my diabetes treatment with Mounjaro.

Unfortunately, the side effects were quite severe, and I became so sick that I had to take time off work.

When I told my manager, they said,

“It’s strange to start diabetes treatment with injections.”

“Maybe you should get a second opinion.”

At the time, I was already feeling awful.

Hearing that made me even more anxious.

“Was my doctor’s treatment really the right one?”

So I decided to visit another hospital.

Changing to tablets

After explaining everything, the doctor looked at my test results and said,

“Your weight was probably one of the reasons your doctor chose Mounjaro.”

That day, my medication was changed to Januvia 50mg.

The side effects disappeared, and I was finally able to go back to work.

But one word stayed in my mind.

Weight.

Then it finally clicked

One day, I suddenly remembered something.

I hadn’t originally gone to the hospital because of diabetes.

I had gone to a weight management clinic.

That’s where they discovered I had diabetes.

I also remembered what the dietitian had told me.

“I think you’re going to lose quite a bit of weight.”

That’s when it finally clicked.

“That’s why they chose Mounjaro.”

I’m a little slow sometimes… haha.

I had become so overwhelmed by everyone’s opinions that I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

But the goal of my treatment wasn’t just controlling my blood sugar.

It was also helping me lose weight.

I wanted to choose a treatment I truly understood

After taking leave from work because of adjustment disorder, I slowly started to calm down.

For the first time in a while, I could think clearly.

I realized,

“I shouldn’t just accept what other people say without thinking. I need to think for myself too.”

I’ve been told that nearly half of my body is fat.

That means I need treatment for both diabetes and obesity.

Once I understood that, I decided to trust my original doctor and continue treatment with Mounjaro.

My treatment now

I visit the hospital once a month and receive four Mounjaro injections.

At each appointment, my doctor checks my weight and overall condition.

I started with 2.5 mg.

The side effects were difficult at first, but little by little my body adjusted.

On injection day, my stomach still feels heavy.

But I no longer end up stuck in bed.

Later, my dose was increased to 5 mg.

Honestly, I was nervous.

But it turned out to be okay.

I hardly snack anymore, and eating three meals a day is enough for me.

I guess that’s just… normal. Haha.

I also can’t eat as much as I used to.

I feel full very quickly.

And little by little, my weight has started to go down.

Even a small change makes me happy.

One unexpected problem

At my next appointment, my doctor told me,

“You’ve lost weight, but you’ve also lost muscle.”

Then they said,

“Make sure you eat plenty of protein.”

Protein…

The only thing that came to mind was eggs.

But eating eggs every single day?

That sounds like too much work. Haha.

So I thought,

“I’ll just drink protein shakes!”

I’ve recently started doing that, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens at my next appointment.

I also started walking

Recently, I’ve started walking my dogs.

It was Ellie’s idea.

He said,

“Let’s go early in the morning before it gets too hot. The dogs are bored staying home every day.”

Honestly, if I had been doing this alone, I probably would have quit after the first day.

But the next morning, he asked me again.

“Let’s go.”

So I did.

We’re only walking short distances for now.

But for someone like me, who hardly exercised at all before, it’s a big first step.

Looking back

This experience taught me something important.

It’s not just about choosing a medication.

It’s about choosing a treatment that you truly understand and feel comfortable with.

I let other people’s opinions make me doubt everything.

But once I stopped, thought things through, and understood my situation, I was able to make my own decision.

Of course, what works for me won’t necessarily work for everyone.

That’s why I think it’s important to talk openly with your doctor and find the treatment that’s right for you.

I’m still on this journey.

I’ll continue sharing how my weight, muscle mass, and blood sugar change over time.

See you next time.

Before Silece.
