My Illness Is Mixed Up

When You Can Function but Still Feel Broken

Today, I want to write about something called a mixed state in bipolar disorder.

I’ve been reading about it recently and trying to understand it better myself.

A mixed state is when symptoms of depression and symptoms of mania or hypomania happen at the same time.

Normally, depression looks something like this:

  • No energy
  • Can’t get moving
  • No motivation
  • No interest in doing anything

And mania usually looks more like this:

  • Lots of energy
  • Highly active
  • Strong confidence
  • Little need for sleep

They seem like opposites.

But a mixed state is different.

Everything gets tangled together.

And sometimes, even you don’t understand what’s happening inside your own mind.

① You Can Function, But You Want to Disappear

This is one of the most difficult parts of a mixed state.

Inside, you might feel:

  • Like you want to disappear
  • Hopeless
  • Full of self-criticism
  • Like crying
  • Afraid of the future

But at the same time, you can still:

  • Go shopping
  • Do household chores
  • Talk to people
  • Enjoy hobbies
  • Keep thinking non-stop

It’s painful.

But you’re still functioning.

And somehow that makes it even more painful.

This is close to where I am right now.

The feeling of wanting to disappear can be strong.

But I’m still living my life.

I’m not completely bedridden.

I can still enjoy my hobbies.

I can still watch movies.

My concentration is probably at about fifty percent,

but it isn’t zero.

From the outside,

people see someone who looks okay.

Someone who looks fine.

But inside, it’s a completely different story.

② My Brain Won’t Slow Down

Another difficult part is this.

  • Thoughts won’t stop
  • Anxiety spins at high speed
  • Constant urgency
  • Restlessness
  • A mind that never becomes quiet
  • A feeling that I always need to be doing something

The strange thing is that my mood isn’t good.

I’m not happy.

In fact, I’m struggling.

Yet my brain keeps running.

Lately my thoughts have been going in circles all day.

I tell myself to calm down.

I tell myself everything will be okay.

But it doesn’t stop.

It continues until bedtime.

That’s why sleeping becomes difficult.

Even after changing medications,

sleep doesn’t come easily.

My mind just keeps moving.

Constantly.

Without a break.

From the outside,

I may look calm.

Inside,

I’m anxious.

I’m overwhelmed.

Sometimes it feels like my heart is trying to jump out of my chest.

That’s why those moments when I accidentally fall asleep on the sofa feel amazing.

Just realizing,

“I actually slept for a little while.”

That alone brings relief.

Those brief moments of unconscious rest feel precious.

But nighttime is scary.

I get into bed.

And then it begins.

“I can’t sleep.”

“I can’t sleep.”

“I can’t sleep.”

The same thought over and over again.

And that fear grows.

③ The Scariest Part Is Being Able to Function

This is probably the hardest part for me.

There are days when I can’t go to work.

Mornings are especially difficult.

I stare into space.

My thoughts slow down.

My mind feels stuck.

Honestly,

it feels a lot like depression.

But it’s not what people typically imagine when they think of depression.

There are also days when I can function.

I can enjoy hobbies.

I can laugh.

And because of that,

I end up asking myself:

“Am I just being lazy?”

That thought hurts.

It really hurts.

If I were completely unable to get out of bed,

maybe it would be easier to accept.

But I can still do some things.

Just not everything.

And because of that,

I keep blaming myself.

Again and again.

I think this feeling is difficult to explain to people who haven’t experienced it.

Even I struggle to put it into words.

💊 Medication and Seeing My Doctor

Right now, I have two weeks’ worth of medication.

To be honest,

I mostly notice the side effects.

The benefits are harder to see.

Maybe I simply need more time.

That could be true.

But right now,

this is still very difficult.

So I’m planning to see my doctor again.

I want to talk about what’s happening.

I want to explain how hard things feel right now.

Because trying to endure it alone isn’t working.

🌙 It’s Hard Because Everything Is Mixed Together

If it were only depression,

it would be depression.

If it were only mania,

it would be mania.

But when they’re mixed together,

even I can’t make sense of it.

I can function,

but I’m struggling.

I can laugh,

but part of me wants to disappear.

I’m tired,

but I can’t sleep.

I’m resting,

but I feel guilty for resting.

Everything feels backwards.

Everything feels out of place.

That’s why it’s so exhausting.

But I’m writing this.

I’m aware of what’s happening.

And I know I need help.

Those things matter.

I don’t need to be perfect.

Right now,

my goal is simply not to make things worse.

For now,

I want to get through this quietly.

One step at a time.

Without rushing myself.

See you next time.

Before I take my Silece.

Bye for now. 🌙
