What Is Dissociative Disorder?

Understanding the “Other Me” Inside Me

Come to think of it…

I explained bipolar disorder before, but I never really explained dissociative disorder. 😂

When people hear the words multiple personalities, many immediately think:

“That sounds scary.”
“Isn’t that dangerous?”

But the truth is much more complicated.

And much quieter.

Sometimes it is simply the mind trying to survive.

So this time, I want to talk a little about my own experience too.

⸻

📝 What Is Dissociative Disorder?

Dissociative Disorder is often understood as a response that happens when someone experiences overwhelming stress or trauma.

Things that are normally connected, such as:

  • Memories
  • Emotions
  • Awareness
  • Sense of self

can become separated.

The result is a person experiencing states that feel different from their usual self.

This is not weakness.

It is not acting.

Sometimes it is simply the mind protecting itself.

⸻

🌫 Common Symptoms

Memory Gaps

Some people lose periods of time.

You may realize hours have passed and not remember what happened.

Sometimes it feels like:

“Why am I here?”

The missing pieces can be frightening.

⸻

Depersonalization

It can feel like:

“I’m not really me.”

Or like watching yourself from outside your body.

Reality feels distant.

Almost like watching a movie instead of living your own life.

⸻

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)

This is what people often call multiple personalities.

Different identities may appear depending on situations or emotions.

Each identity can have:

  • Different names
  • Different personalities
  • Different ways of speaking
  • Different emotions

And it is not always something a person can control.

⸻

🛡 Why Does It Happen?

Dissociation is not weakness.

It is not pretending.

It is not attention seeking.

It is a survival response.

⸻

Imagine carrying pain that feels impossible to hold.

Memories too painful.

Emotions too heavy.

Experiences too overwhelming.

The mind may say:

“Let someone else carry this.”

“Put this pain somewhere safe.”

And that is how survival happens.

That is how I understand dissociation.

⸻

💬 My Experience

At one point, I had as many as thirteen identities.

Even now I think:

“That was a lot.” 😂

Today things are much calmer.

The ones who remain are:

Kamyu

and

Yuu

They do not come forward the way they once did.

Now they feel more like quiet companions.

Watching.

Protecting.

Staying nearby.

⸻

There is also someone who could not be integrated.

Akira-san.

He still exists somewhere deep inside.

⸻

Akira carried something I struggle with:

Anger.

I am not good at anger.

I hide it.

Swallow it.

Pretend it does not exist.

Maybe that is why someone else carried it for me.

In my mind, Akira still stays quietly in a place that feels like a protected room.

That is how I imagine it.

⸻

🌙 Living With Dissociation

Explaining dissociation is difficult.

There is misunderstanding.

There is fear.

There is stigma.

Because of that, I have not fully explained everything to my family.

⸻

But I told Ellie.

Honestly.

I was scared.

I worried he would reject me.

He didn’t.

He accepted me.

That meant everything.

⸻

I do not see these identities as enemies.

They are not monsters.

They never tried to destroy me.

They appeared because I needed them.

They helped me survive.

And now…

I feel something close to gratitude.

⸻

🌱 What I Think Now

Dissociative disorder may be rare.

It may be difficult for people to understand.

But for me,

it was a way to stay alive.

⸻

Should every identity be integrated?

Should they remain?

There is no simple answer.

No perfect ending.

⸻

But I believe this:

All of them are part of me.

Every version.

Every memory.

Every survival strategy.

They are proof that I kept going.

⸻

So I do not want to erase them.

I do not want to hate them.

⸻

I want to keep walking forward.

As myself.

Together with them.

⸻

This was a heavier topic than usual.

But if someone reads this and thinks:

“Maybe it isn’t something scary.”

then I’ll be happy.

See you again,

before the Silece kicks in.

Bye bye 🌙
